Is Walking the Bridge Worth It?

What the walk gives you
The scale. Nothing on shore prepares you for standing at the base of the south tower with 746 feet of steel going up, or for the deck moving a little underfoot in a gust. You get the cables at arm’s length, the ships passing 220 feet below, and the city behind you on the way back. The walking page has the hours and the rules; the what-to-wear page will keep you from turning back at the first tower.
When the cruise is the better hour
If you have exactly one hour, the walk gets you to mid-span and back and the boat gets you under the bridge, round Alcatraz and home with a commentary. If mobility is an issue, the boat is wheelchair accessible and the deck is a long exposed mile. If the fog is on the deck and not moving, the boat still sees the towers from below. Chad, on the bay cruise, called it a new vantage point of the bridge and downtown, which is the honest case for it. The cruise vs bike page weighs the options.
Walk to the south tower and back if the full crossing is too much. It is the best quarter mile of the bridge and takes twenty minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to walk the whole way across?
No. Many people walk to the south tower or to mid-span and turn back. The full crossing and the return options are on the walking page.
Is it worth it in the fog?
For the atmosphere, yes; for the view, no. Fog usually lifts late morning in summer. See the best-time page.
Is the bay cruise worth it if I have already walked?
It shows the one thing the walk cannot: the underside at 220 feet. The bay cruise close-up explains the hour.
