Best Golden Gate Bridge Viewpoints

The classic photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge with the city behind it is taken from Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands, high above the north tower. On the San Francisco side the best free spots are Battery East Vista, the Golden Gate Overlook and Crissy Field, with Fort Point for the view from directly underneath. Two viewpoints cost money: the water, from a cruise, and the air, from a seaplane.

Battery Spencer, Marin Headlands

This is the one on the postcards. You stand on an old gun battery above the north tower and look down the length of the deck to the city. The tower is close enough that you can see the rivets, and the skyline sits between the cables. It is windy every day of the year, and it is high above the north tower, so the climb from Vista Point on foot is real.

The Presidio side

Battery East Vista is a short walk east of the Welcome Center and gives the south tower and the full span with Marin behind. The Golden Gate Overlook and the Pacific Overlook are further west, with the ocean side of the bridge in the frame. Presidio Tunnel Tops and Battery Bluff are the newer viewpoints in the Presidio. All are free and none needs a booking.

Crissy Field and Fort Point

The Crissy Field Overlook puts the bridge behind the beach and the wetlands. Walk on along the shore to Fort Point, the brick Civil War fort directly under the south end, and you get the underside: the arch of the approach, the deck overhead and the traffic noise coming down through the steel. Vista Point, the north end

Vista Point is where the walk ends. It looks back across the deck to the city. It is busiest at weekends, so it is better early on a weekday or in the last hour before the sidewalk closes. From here the road drops to Sausalito.

From the water

No shore viewpoint shows you the bridge from beneath the middle of the span. The bay cruise from Pier 43½ passes under the deck at 220 feet and gives you both towers at full height with nothing in the way. From the air

The seaplane out of Mill Valley flies over the bridge in a 30-minute loop that also takes in Alcatraz, Angel Island and downtown. Every seat is a window seat. It is the only viewpoint on this list with a weight limit and a no-refund rule.

Local tip

For a photograph with the fog, get to Battery Spencer around 9:00 am in July. The tower tops usually stand clear above the bank while the deck is still hidden.
