Cruise or Bike Across the Bridge?

What you actually see of the bridge
From the boat you see the part no sidewalk shows: the underside of the deck passing overhead at 220 feet, both towers at full height, the cables meeting the anchorages, and the new net. You also get the bridge in context, with the Marin Headlands on one side and the city on the other. From the bike you see what a walker sees, the deck, the railings, the cables going up, plus the descent into Sausalito, and you cover it faster than on foot. Margot, who rode the Sausalito tour, said cycling the bridge was the best part of her trip. Juliane, on the bay cruise, said the same of the skyline from the water.
Time and effort
The cruise is an hour from Pier 43½ and back; you can be at lunch by noon. The bike tour is three hours from Fisherman’s Wharf to Sausalito, then the ferry, so budget half a day. The ride is flat along the waterfront until the Presidio climb, which is short and steep. Tamanna and Rami both suggest the e-bike for it.
Weather
The boat has indoor seating and panoramic windows, so fog and drizzle spoil the photographs but not the trip; Kim’s advice was simply to bring a jacket. The bike tours run rain or shine, and on the deck the wind is the real issue. A cancellation for dangerous weather gets you a new date or a refund on the Sausalito tour. Check the best-time page before you pick a day.
Accessibility and children
The bay cruise is wheelchair accessible, has restrooms and welcomes any age; Marta took the whole family. The bike tours need riders who can handle traffic and a hill. E-bikes are for 13 and over, riders under 18 must be with an adult, and children’s bikes or seats on the Sausalito tour need a call to the operator a day ahead.

My answer
If you have one hour and want to see the bridge, take the boat. If you have a morning and want to cross it, take the bike. If you have both, do the bike in the morning, ferry back to Pier 41, and catch the 5:30 pm cruise for the underside. The cruise page and the bike-tours page go deeper on each side, and the free walk competes with both.
The two products start a few blocks apart at Fisherman’s Wharf, so a morning ride and an evening cruise need no extra transport.
Frequently asked questions
Is the bay cruise or the bike tour better for children?
The cruise, for any age under about ten; it has seats, toilets and a bar. The bike tours need a rider who copes with traffic and a hill. The bay cruise page has the family details.
Can I do both in one day?
Yes. Ride in the morning, ferry back from Sausalito to Pier 41 and take the 5:30 pm cruise from Pier 43½. The ferry page covers the middle step.
Does the bike tour go under the bridge?
No. Bikes cross on the deck; only the boats pass beneath. Fort Point gives a free view from underneath on land; see the viewpoints page.
