Golden Gate Park or the Bridge?

Golden Gate Park and the Golden Gate Bridge are two different places about three miles apart. The bridge crosses the strait at the north edge of the city; the park is a long rectangle of lawns, lakes and museums to the south. Both take their name from the strait. The park is free to enter, and its museums charge admission. You cannot see the bridge from the park.

How the mix-up happens

Both are named for the Golden Gate strait, and both show up when you search the two words. I have watched people head for the park when they wanted the bridge and lose an afternoon. The Muni 28 along 19th Avenue reaches the bridge, and the getting-there page has the stop.

Which one you want

If your search was about walking across, the toll, the fog, the sidewalk hours or a boat, you want the bridge, and the walking page is the place to start. If it was about a museum, a garden, a bison paddock or a Sunday with the roads closed to cars, you want the park. The park has no toll and no boats; the bridge has no museums, apart from the small Welcome Center. The name page explains the shared name.

Local tip

If you want both in one day, do the park first and the bridge last. The walk on the deck is the better end to an afternoon, and the sidewalk stays open until 9:00 pm in summer.
